SES Side-Bi-Side Cell Photos and Information

Our Side-Bi-Side Cell Clamps are available
now in stainless steel. Black anodized
aluminum clamps will be available soon.
The stainless steel model pictured to the
left, #5G-CC, has two rubber bumpers,
one located in the vertical component of
the left side and the other in the end of
the tightening knob to help in safely
securing your membrane or device
between the halves of the cell. The holes
in the base of the clamp are to locate it
correctly on an H Series Stirrer. When
available, aluminum clamps can only be
used on single station stirrers and are for
membranes or devices thicker than 3mm.

The photo to the left is of a Side-Bi-Side
Cell Clamp and the most common variety
of Side-Bi-Side Cell. The cell has a 9mm
orifice diameter and 3.4ml volumes on both
sides of the joint. Notice that each half of
the cell is marked with its volume.

Standard Side-Bi-Side Cells are supplied
with a 7/25 ground glass joint in the top
of each cell half. Many different joints
are available including larger tapered
joints, threaded joints, and luer joints.

The straight glass ports at the rear of
the cell halves are for connecting to a
heater/circulator if you are only using one
cell. They are used to connect to the hose
barbs of the water manifolds on our stirrers.
The other ports at the front of the cell are
normally connected together with a short
length of tubing to allow the warming water
to flow from one cell half to the other.

The Side-Bi-Side Cell from the left side is
shown to the left so the clamping surfaces
can be seen. These surfaces are ground
and lapped flat to minimize leakage. The
photo to the right is an end view of the
right side of the cell looking directly
through the 9mm orifice diameter.

Our cells should not leak even with very
thin items like dialysis membranes, skin
normally acts as its own gasket. We also
supply .75mm thick Teflon®closed cell
gaskets for all sizes and varieties of our
diffusion cells if you feel you need
additional sealing capability.

The cell shown in the photo to the left is a
Side-Bi-Side Cell with an extra 7/25 ground
joint in each cell half. These cells are often
used in iontophoresis work and one or both
of the 7/25 Teflon® stoppers in each side
may be supplied with a hole for an electrode
wire. These cells have 3.4ml volumes on both
sides of the joint just like the standard cells.

This Side-Bi-Side Cell also has the common
9mm orifice diameter but its volumes are
2ml instead of the 3.4ml standard.
9mm Side-Bi-Side Cells are also available
in 1ml volumes.

The researcher who purchased this cell requested an
additional port for each cell halve. 12mm diameter
device were placed in both the donor and receptor
chambers. We supply Teflon® stoppers with our
diffusion cells unless glass stoppers are requested.
Occasionally Teflon® stoppers are not available in a
particular size and then glass stoppers are supplied.

The amber Side-Bi-Side Cell shown to the left has a
15mm diameter orifice and a 13-425 threaded joint
for a septum cap on the right half. The 7/25 female
joint on the left half is standard.

The Valia-Chien Cell shown here to the left has a
spherical joint for performing corneal research.
The orifice in the 18mm diameter spherical surface
is 9mm. Spherical joints are also available with
3mm orifices in 12mm diameters and 5mm orifices in
12mm diameters. This cell has the standard 3.4ml
volumes on both sides of the joint.

Valia-Chien Cells have #7G-CC Cell Clamps that
clamp them from the outer ends of the cell halves
also. These clamps are not really necessary for
clamping but are useful when using Valia-Chien
Cells on the magnetic stirrers designed for them.
The clamp shown here is the standard
#CC-09-FG Franz Cell Clamp.

This closeup view of two halves of a Valia-Chien Cell
with spherical joint has dotted lines added to more
clearly show the inner joint surfaces.

This cell has a 3mm orifice diameter going
through the 12mm diameter joint.

The Side-Bi-Side Cell shown to the left is of the
5mm unjacketed variety. You would use this cell if
temperature was not a concern unless you were
going to use it in an environment in which you could
control the temperature. Since the outer jackets of
both sides of the cell are not present, the
#5G-CC Cell Clamp cannot be used. Therefore a
pinchclamp is used for the flat ground joint that
holds the membrane between the cell halves. The
center-to-center distance of the wells where the
stirbars are located remains the same as with a
jacketed cell so this cell can still be used on an
H Series Stirrer and have both sides of the
membrane agitated.

The Side-Bi-Side Cell shown to the left
is also of the unjacketed variety like the
5mm cell shown in the section above,
but this cell has a 9mm diameter orifice
and a larger clamp to accommodate the
orifice.

The Side-Bi-Side Cell shown to the left
has a 15mm orifice diameter, a flat flange
joint, and 3.4ml volumes.

This specially customized Side-Bi-Side Cell
is larger than a Side-Bi-Side Cell and smaller
than a Super Cell. It has a 15mm orifice
diameter and 34ml volumes. The large 19/22
Teflon® stoppers allow 15mm diameter
devices to be inserted and submerged inside
the donor and receptor chambers. The
customer supplied their own clamps.

There is a larger variety of Side-Bi-Side Cells
available. The Side-Bi-Side Super Cell shown
to the left has a 30mm orifice diameter and
each cell half has a 50ml volume. Super Cells
are available in orifice diameters up to 60mm
and volumes up to 200ml.

This amber The Side-Bi-Side Super Cell
has a 40mm orifice diameter and 50ml
volumes. 19/22 female ground glass joints
are standard on Side-Bi-Side Super Cells.
